Jonas Malmberg is a Swedish visual artist whose painterly practice explores the space between the familiar and the elusive. Through digital and physical collage, he brings together references from art history with fragments of contemporary visual culture, creating compositions in which different temporalities coexist. His paintings move between the archetypal and the contemporary through a visual language marked by stillness, ambiguity, and muted tonalities.
Animals frequently recur as central figures in Malmberg’s work, functioning as vessels for projection, symbolism, and psychological presence. Through these recurring motifs, he examines humanity’s shifting relationship to nature, where nature is increasingly encountered as image, memory, or representation rather than as lived experience. Drawing on the visual traditions of the Renaissance and the Baroque, his work reflects on a contemporary condition in which the boundaries between observation and imagination continue to dissolve.
